No Bed of Roses, Signed by Joan Fontaine
[Signed] Fontaine, Joan. No Bed of Roses, An Autobiography. Eighth Printing. 1978. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket is price-clipped. Book is inscribed in Fontaine’s typical pink marker, “For Rita—Roses to you! Joan Fontaine.”
As her sister Olivia de Havilland would be the first to proclaim, Miss Congeniality, Joan Fontaine was not. And, this book accurately conveys the uncompromising nature of its author. Yet, nice is rarely interesting, and Fontaine’s candor is to its credit, as she recalls her turbulent marriages, up-and-down career, jet set lifestyle, and of course, the lifelong feud with her even more famous sister.
“After Olivia delivered her acceptance speech [for her Academy Award] and entered the wings, I, standing close by, went over to congratulate her as I would have done any winner. She took one look at me, ignored my outstretched hand, clutched her Oscar to her bosom, and wheeled away.”
