Miltoun, Francis. The Automobilist Abroad. First Edition. 1907. Hardcover in pictorial green cloth with embossed gilt titles. It is in very good condition—hinge seam shows a tear; there is an elegant gift inscription from 1907; and covers show light foxing. Illustrations by Blanche McManus.
This attractive book preceded Google Maps by approximately one century, and, in terms of elegance and style, it is still ahead of its electronic rival. The author, an automobile enthusiast, offers advice on how to travel by motor through England, France, Germany, the Pyrenees, and Holland. There is advice on road-adjacent hotels just then being developed with the motor vehicle in mind. The book contains a color frontispiece and thirty-eight sepia and b & w plates.
“The vocabulary of the automobile has produced an entirely new ‘jargon’ which is Greek to the multitude, but, oh, so expressive and full of meaning to the initiated.”
--Frances Miltoun
