The performance Mrs. Lincoln saw on that fateful night was obviously not Cabaret, but the sarcastic understatement, "Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?" was what came to mind after reading a recent New York Times profile on Michelle Williams. Williams is set to portray Sally Bowles in a revival of this legendary musical, which is based upon a story by Christopher Isherwood. The article reports that to prepare for the role, Williams “visited with Don Bachardy, who used to live with Christopher Isherwood.” Of course, Bachardy was much more than an erstwhile roommate. He was the love of Isherwood’s life. They were together for over three decades, and Bachardy is Isherwood’s literary executor. There are books on the subject (the three installments of the Isherwood Diaries, to name several), as well as a film documentary.
