Weegee. Naked Hollywood. Second Edition. 1975. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—light fraying to the jacket’s upper spine. Foreword, editing, and captions by Mel Harris.
This book of photographs was first published in 1953—an era when the major film studios had an army of publicists, tough guys, and security personnel to make sure that books like this one did not get published. Somehow they failed. A precursor to Hollywood Babylon, this book’s aesthetic is Louis B Mayer’s MGM publicity machine . . . if Diane Arbus headed that department. Weegee, the photographer known for crime scene photos, manages to make Hollywood look like, well, a crime scene. Mel Harris’s captions and juxtapositions add to the dark humor.
“There are more misconceptions haunting Hollywood than there are stars.”
--Mel Harris (foreword)
