[Ex Libris George Cukor] Kelly, Linda. The Young Romantics, Paris 1827-37. First Edition. 1976. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. This copy is ex libris the film director George Cukor. His famous Paul Landacre-designed bookplate is attached the front endpaper.
George Cukor’s bookplate is one of Hollywood’s most iconic. It is found attached to a remarkably diverse and literate array of books, substantiating Cukor’s reputation as the gentleman director. This book covers the Bloomsbury-like entanglements in the circle of Victor Hugo, Balzac, and George Sand in the years prior to the restoration of the monarchy under Louis Philippe. The author was an avowed Francophile and the former travel editor for British Vogue.
“Brought up amidst the dramas of Napoleon’s wars, [Victor Hugo and his generation] had reached manhood to the anticlimax of peace and Bourbon rule. Restless and dissatisfied, their dreams of military glory frustrated, they turned themselves instead towards the liberation of the arts.”
