[Ex Libris George Cukor] Huxley, Aldous. Ape and Essence. First Edition. 1948. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. This copy is ex libris the film director George Cukor. His famous Paul Landacre-designed bookplate is attached the front endpaper.
Unlike many in Hollywood, George Cukor “loved writers,” and they “could look forward to being invited to George’s to meet other writers.” The literary giant and Los Angeles transplant Aldous Huxley was in that set, so it is not surprising to find one of his novels in Cukor’s library. Professionally, they were a near miss. In 1938, Huxley was to write the script for a Cukor-directed biopic on Marie Curie starring Greta Garbo. However, this version of the project was never made.
“The Huxley home in the Hollywood Hills was a hotspot for west coast avant-garde and attracted such luminaries as Orson Welles, Igor Stravinsky, George Cukor and Christopher Isherwood.”
