[Signed Presentation to George Cukor] Chase, Ilka. In Bed We Cry. First Edition. 1943. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is inscribed “For my darling Georgie – I am still trying to oust your fiancee with no success, much love Ilka, Hollywood, Jan 18th, 1944.” Includes Cukor’s bookplate.
This sophisticated novel about a female cosmetics tycoon was considered racy for its era. It was compared to The Women, in which Ilka Chase starred on Broadway and George Cukor directed in Hollywood. The identify of the individual to whom Ilka Chase refers to as Cukor’s fiancée remains a mystery, but a letter exists from Chase to Cukor indicating this person lives “in sin” (Chase’s words) with a man named Dick and that the couple planned to stop by Cukor’s for a visit en route to boarding an ocean liner for Hawaii.
“The trouble is that the opposite sexes are rarely experiencing the same sentiments at the same time.”
