Marx, Groucho. Many Happy Returns! An Unofficial Guide to Your Income Tax Problems. First Edition. 1942. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Illustrated by O. Soglow.
In 1942, the year this book went to press, the top marginal tax rate was eighty-eight per cent. However, there was no tea party in protest, as most of those who might have participated had been conscripted into the military. World War II was raging, which was the reason the tax rate was so high in the first place. Groucho Marx does his patriotic duty here, making sure Americans become too occupied laughing about the tax system to complain about it. In between one-liners and fun stories, there are kernels of truth. Includes cartoon illustration.
“What do you think the government does with your money? Spends it on a woman? Gets drunk? Or plays the ponies? That’s what you might do with the money, or if you have to get personal, what I do.”
--Groucho Marx
