Lounsbery, Elizabeth. Entertaining Without a Maid. First Edition. 1941. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows a tiny chip to the front cover, mild fading to the spine, and rubbing to the back cover.
Rosie the Riveter, the heroine of World War II, did not emerge Aphrodite-like from the sea. In fact, some of the Rosies had once been Rosie the Housekeepers. As such, this book—published in the same year as the United States entered the war—was particularly well timed, because domestic help became as scarce as this book is today. The book sets out principles for simple-yet-elegant entertaining in a variety of scenarios, including teas, cocktail gatherings, weekend visits, and an assortment of casual-to-formal dinner parties.
“There can be no question that simple touches such as any hostess can give, with but trifling added expense, always enhance the appeal of a party meal. All you have to remember is that charm is better than fussiness.”
