Toklas, Alice B. The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook. First English Edition. 1954. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Illustrations by Sir Francis Rose.
Alice B. Toklas took great pains to remain in the shadows. She enjoyed the spotlight, but only when it was pointed at her famous partner, Gertrude Stein. Neither Toklas nor Stein would be pleased that in the 1960s, Toklas had greater name recognition, and all because of the inclusion of a recipe for hashish fudge in her best-selling cookbook. Do not look for it in the American edition, where it was excised, but it was included in this English edition. The book contains reminisces and nearly three hundred fifty recipes, many of which were enjoyed by Hemingway, Picasso, Matisse, and so many others.
“What is sauce for the goose may be sauce for the gander but is not necessarily sauce for the chicken, the duck, the turkey or the guinea hen.”
