Byron, Nora. Eton: A Dame’s Chronicle. First Edition. 1965. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—endpapers show foxing. Illustrations by Elizabeth Andrewes. Laid into this copy is a clipping for an Eton employment advertisement for the position of Dame from an August 9, 2000 issue of the Daily Telegraph.
The Duke of Wellington once quipped, “The battle of Waterloo was won on the playing field of Eton.” That is to say Eton educates a significant number of England’s best and brightest. How fascinating to go behind the scenes with Nora Byron who was an Eton M’Dame for five decades (from 1928 to 1963). In this memoir, she recalls some of her more colorful charges and also how Eton’s customs and ways changed (and did not change) in those years. Includes frequent b & w illustration.
