[Ex Libris Elsa Schiaparelli] Pearson, Hesketh. Oscar Wilde, His Life and Wit. First Edition. 1946. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows small edge tears and light fraying. Book is from the library of Elsa Schiaparelli with her ownership signature on the flyleaf.
Oscar Wilde died a broken man in Paris in 1900. Elsa Schiaparelli arrived in Paris a bankrupted woman in 1922. Only Schiaparelli was on her way up, and along the way, she accumulated an eclectic library, of which this biography was once a part. Though not entirely sympathetic to its subject, the book began Wilde’s rehabilitation with some resistance by newspaper reviews that questioned whether Wilde’s “evil life should be set aside.” Schiaparelli was never one to shy away from controversy. It is no surprise that it would be in her collection.
“Perhaps Wilde’s most lovable aspect was his constant desire to please and amuse everyone with whom he came into contact: he did not reserve his brilliance and charm for distinguished company or important individuals.”
