Duke and Duchess of Windsor Christmas Card: “Dizzy and Thomas.” Circa 1950s. Provenance: Dr. Henry Wisdom Cave, a surgeon who performed an operation on the Duchess in 1951.
This is one of the most lovely of the Windsors’ personalized holiday cards. It contains portraits of their dogs Dizzy (a pug) and Thomas (a terrier). The card opens from the middle to reveal a gold crown monogram with the message, “We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Edward and Wallis.” Both dogs are referenced in a 1952 letter from the Duchess to her husband who was away attending his brother’s funeral,. “Thomas is miserable and takes it out on Dizzy,” writes the Duchess.
