Singer, Isaac Bashevis. The Power of Light, Eight Stories for Hanukkah. First English Edition. 1983. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Illustrations by Irene Lieblich.
The Nobel Prize winning-author presents eight short stories, one for each day of Hanukkah. They are geared towards adolescents, but they are mature enough to be appreciated by adults as well. They include: a recollection of the author’s childhood Hanukkah celebration in Poland; the story of two World War II refugees who escape to Israel; a tale about a stray parakeet found on a cold Hanukkah night who is appropriately named Dreidel and becomes the catalyst for a happy marriage; and a story about the transformative love shared by two blind children. Book includes full-page color illustration.
“On Hanukkah [Dreidel] always gets a gift—a mirror, a ladder, a bathtub, a wing, or a jingle bell. He has even developed a taste for potato pancakes, as befits a parakeet named Dreidel.”
--Issac Bashevis Singer
