Beaton, Cecil. The Happy Years, Diaries: 1944-48. First Edition. 1972. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows minor repaired tears and light fraying.
An intimate said of Cecil Beaton, “I never knew anyone who had nearly as much joy in being a member of the cast of the play we all act out, and it is only in terms of that joy that one can really know him.” The improbable female lead in this “play” was Greta Garbo. He fell in love with her in 1946. Much of this volume concerns their relationship; hence, his happy years. Other topics include visits to the British Embassy in Paris during the reign of Duff and Diana Cooper and the beginning of Beaton’s career as a theatrical designer.
“Each and every outing [with Greta Garbo] is an adventure for me. It is as if I am learning a new language or discovering a foreign country. Each day I feel I am able to understand more clearly how this person differs from the rest of humanity.”
