[Signed to Bill “Woods” Gray] Beaton, Cecil. My Royal Past, The Memoirs of Baroness von Bülop. Revised Edition. 1960. Book is inscribed, “To my dearest Woods, Precious Memories, Hilda.” On that same page it is signed “Baroness von Bülop.”
Cecil Beaton had a talent to amuse, but in this mock memoir of a royal dowager, he was undoubtedly amused as well. In addition to the b & w illustrations, which he drew, he assembled friends such as Christian Bérard and Sir Francis Rose to pose for outlandish staged photographs. In most, they appear in drag. This copy is from the library of Beaton’s friend Woods Gray, and though the inscriptions are ostensibly signed by fictional characters from the book, they are most likely in Beaton’s hand [other books in Gray’s collection are indeed signed by him].
