Ruscha, Ed. Metro Plots. First Edition. 1999. Hardcover (no dust jacket—as issued). Book is in very good condition. Essay by Dave Hickey.
Ed Ruscha once remarked, “Perhaps there would be more anxiety in my work if I lived in New York.” Well, ask anyone who has attempted to drive from the Westside to a Friday night concert downtown at Disney Hall. There is plenty of anxiety to be had in Los Angeles. This book is the catalogue from a Gagosian Gallery exhibition. It plays with the space/time conceptions of Southern California streets and traffic. Some of the images superimpose the nearby (but faraway) mountain ranges. Others are “seen through a spray of gray paint,” as if from a helicopter engulfed in dense smog.
“By turning a map into a landscape, Ruscha has, in effect, transformed the Jeffersonian Grid into Bruneleschi’s pyramid.”
