[Signed] Ruscha, Ed. They Called Her Styrene. First Edition. 2000. Hardcover in pictorial covers, no dust jacket (as issued). Book is in good plus condition—there is light fraying to the corners, a small remainder mark to the bottom page edges, and a publisher stamp on the first page stating “non mint copy.” The upper page edges are signed in pencil “Ed Ruscha.”
This book collects five hundred seventy-five of Ruscha’s “word” prints, drawings, and paintings that juxtapose the language of the commercial world against atmospheric backgrounds. There is very little text and one image to a page. The order has been arranged by Ruscha into “a sort of novel without an obvious plot, a series of words with an implied narrative.”
“All my artistic response comes from American things, and I guess I've always had a weakness for heroic imagery.”
