[Signed Presentation from Peggy Guggenheim to Claire Falkenstein] Calas, Nicolas and Elena. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection of Modern Art. European Edition. 1967. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows tears and moderate wear. Book is warmly inscribed on the title page, “With love to Claire in her other Venice paradise, Peggy, Aug 1969.”
This impressive folio-sized book is a catalogue raisonné of the art collection that Peggy Guggenheim housed in her Venetian palazzo. Each of the one hundred eighty-nine items is depicted in a full-page plate, with forty in full color. One of the color plates—#143—depicts “Gate to the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni,” by Claire Falkenstein, the artist to whom this copy is signed. Falkenstein’s “other Venice paradise” was her studio in Venice, California.
“[Peggy Guggenheim] most aptly calls herself an art addict. Like all addicts, she is addicted to metamorphosis, to the magic of transformation.”
--Nicolas and Elena Calas
