The Sixties, A Decade in Vogue (Black and White Ball)
Drake, Nicholas (ed.). The Sixties, A Decade in Vogue. First Edition. 1988. Book and dust jacket are both in very good minus condition. There is a red remainder mark to the bottom page edges, and the jacket shows minor fraying around the perimeter.
The 1960s sent culture and fashion on a roller coaster ride into the Space Age … or the Age of Aquarius (take your pick). Diana Vreeland baptized it a Youthquake. Her magazine, Vogue, recorded the decade’s every twist and turn. Organized by year, this oversize book magnificently reproduces the photography, illustration, and photography that appeared in the magazine, from fashion shoots with Veruschka and Jean Shrimpton, to profiles of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, the Beatles, and President and Mrs. Kennedy. There is of course a story on the biggest party of the decade, Truman Capote’s Black and White ball, written by none other than Gloria Steinem.
“A first-rate mind rarely devotes itself to the creation of a social event. But when it does, watch out.”
--Gloria Steinem
