[Signed Presentation] Fielding, Daphne. Emerald & Nancy, Lady Cunard and Her Daughter. First English Edition. 1968. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows fraying and a 1-inch tear to the upper front cover. Book is warmly inscribed “To Edmond, friend + guru, with much love, from Daphne.” It is also signed “Daphne Fielding” on the title page. Laid in is a full-page, handwritten letter addressed to “Monsieur Edmond Colomb de Daunant” and signed “Daphne.”
Daphne Fielding, having had friends in common with both mother and daughter, writes about the Cunards from a uniquely personal viewpoint. A trove of personal reminisces and anecdotes make the inimitable Lady Cunard come alive. Yet, a hagiography it is not. Fielding makes no secret of Emerald’s aversion for motherhood and how it contributed to daughter Nancy’s later difficulties.
“How could he do this to me?”
--Emerald Cunard, On the abdication of Edward VIII
