The Colony, Portrait of a Restaurant—and Its Famous Recipes, Signed
[Signed] Brody, Iles. The Colony, Portrait of a Restaurant—and Its Famous Recipes. American Edition, Second Printing. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—covers show moderate wear, and jacket shows repaired tears, chipping, and a water stain affecting the spine and lower left front cover. Book is inscribed on the flyleaf, “To Dr. and Mrs. Folder, with deep affection, Iles Brody, 1945.”
Who says a reputation cannot be remade? The Colony began as a restaurant for New York’s demimonde, but was eventually embraced by the fashionable set and remained among the city’s top society restaurants long after this book appeared; Jackie and Ari were regulars in the months before their 1968 marriage. Alongside recipes and menus, Iles Brody captures the restaurant’s singular character and its Robin Hood sense of justice: owner Gene Cavallero was known to raise or lower a bill according to his estimate of a patron’s means.
“The Colony is one of the few places in New York where I finish my vegetables; and more often than not, at other places I don’t even begin them.”
