Beaton, Cecil. Japanese. First Edition. 1959. Book is in good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition.
In the winter of 1957, Cecil Beaton accompanied Truman Capote on a journey to Japan to gather information for a story Capote was writing for Harper’s Bazaar on the Marlon Brando vehicle Sayonara, filming on location there. Capote used half-truths and charm to cajole a reluctant Brando into giving him an interview (which Brando came to regret). Beaton transformed their adventures into an exquisite book—an album of b & w photographs and pen & ink drawings. Beaton collaborated with the publisher on an innovative design. One page from each chapter folds out, and provides captions for all images of that chapter.
“There is much to see and do in Tokyo. But just as a New York visitor gravitates to Times Square or a London sightseer to Piccadilly, the itinerant tourist soon finds his way to Asakusa. Here, all is glitter and dross.”
