Bonhams London. The Savoy Sale. Softcover. 2007. Book is in very good condition. Foreword by Sir Michael Gambon.
The Savoy was London’s first American-style luxury hotel. It opened in 1898 with only three rooms for every bathroom (so modern), and for the next century, guest register names read like an International Who’s Who. Not everyone was pleased when it was stripped of its contents for a remodel, but fortunately, the old Savoy lives on in this detailed catalogue. It includes a photograph of practically every room style and depicts three thousand lots of furniture and decoration, most in their original context.
“Gertrude Lawrence, Marlene Dietrich and Tallulah Bankhead might be spotted dining the Savoy Grill while ingénue Vivien Leigh was first introduced to Laurence Olivier in the hotel’s foyer one evening after dinner.”
--Susan Scott, Savoy Archivist
