Hood, Diana Wells. Working for the Windsors. First Edition. 1957. Book and dust jacket are both in good plus condition—book shows minor foxing to the edges as a slightly musty scent; jacket shows minor fraying and small edge tears.
One prerogative the Duke of Windsor retained following his abdication was the tradition of paying staff twenty percent less than they would earn outside of royal service. In exchange, they had a window into history. This memoir by the Duke’s private secretary covers the Windsors as they shuttle between Paris and the Riviera in the years leading up to World War II. Of all the books relating to the Duke and Duchess, it is one of the least common. There was never an American edition.
“It has sometimes been suggested that the Windsors during their exile on the Continent were the leaders of a gay fashionable set, going everywhere, doing everything. In the years preceding the War this was far from being the case.”
