Chase, Lucille. Skirts Aloft. First Edition. 1959. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition.
Glamour has made a resurgence, but this vintage memoir from a United Airlines flight attendant reminds us that it is sadly no longer up in the air. At the time of the book’s publication, if one could not become a film actress or model, stewardess was the next best option. Many of the stories center around the mayhem created when old America meets new technology. There are young boys complaining that the flight is not bumpy enough, men fearful of flying who depart via the emergency exit while the plane is taxiing, and stewardesses who can’t see to keep their uniforms on (innocently, of course). This book is uncommon, particularly with dust jacket intact.
“Due to the fact she must quit her job when she gets married, the average ‘life’ of a stewardess is 18 months.”
