Windsor Photographs, Signed by Jerome Zerbe
Zerbe, Jerome. Pair of Duke and Duchess of Windsor Photographs: “The Duchess of Windsor” and “The Windsors Moulin at Gif." Shot/Printed 1961. Approximately 10 x 8 inches. Semi-gloss double weight fiber silver gelatin. Unframed. Both are titled and signed in ink, with stamp and notations on recto. Both are in very good condition.
There are many ubiquitous images of the Duchess of Windsor. This image by the noted society lensman is not one of them. It is not even in his monograph, Happy Times. As such, this is an opportunity to display something original, and it signed by Zerbe on the front, to boot. Accompanying it is an image of the Windsors’ country home Le Moulin de la Tuilerie (also known by Windsor intimates as the Mill).
“In the late summer of 1952 the Windsors had finally bought, from their friend the artist Drian, the Moulin de la Tuilerie (‘The Mill’) at Gif-sur-Yvette. The business of restoring, converting and decorating this near-derelict property into a country house where they could live and entertain would be a long and expensive business.”
--Windsor Biographer Michael Bloch
