Crawford, Joan. A Portrait of Joan, An Autobiography by Joan Crawford. Early Printing. 1962. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket shows minor fraying and creasing.
In Mommie Dearest, Christina Crawford took an ax to her mother’s reputation, making Joan Crawford a camp legend but diminishing her as a Hollywood icon. Crawford endured a Dickensian childhood and only by working terribly hard made a name for herself in Hollywood. Perhaps she should have never had children, but there is much to admire about her, as one is reminded by reading this autobiography. In it, one learns how she taught herself style, poise, and good manners, all while enduring the condescension of her erstwhile mother-in-law Mary Pickford.
“There are those who within marriage keep part of themselves intact, but for me there was only totality. The motivation since childhood had been toward belonging. Now there was someone to belong to. I was strictly the wife I felt Douglas [Fairbanks] wanted me to be.”
--Joan Crawford
