Fur, Feather, and Fin: Salmon
Gathorne-Hardy, A.E. The Salmon. Fur, Feather, and Fin Series. 1898. Hardcover in good condition—foxing to the glassine page separating a page with an engraving from the next page, the title page. The condition issue with this book is not the cover but improper cutting of the pages—a publishing defect and some are attached to the adjacent page (book never read apparently). With contributions by Claud Douglas Pennant and Alexander Innes Shand.
With its red-embossed titles and inked illustration on thick boards covered in what appears to be linen, this would be a decorative addition to the sportsman’s library: suitable laid an on end table perhaps. The book covers all aspects of salmon fishing from the best tackle to the most delicious methods of food preparation.
“’My first salmon!’ What fisherman is there ‘so dead in memory—so old in heart’ that he does not recall to mind that eventful landmark in his career.”
--A.E. Gathorne-Hardy
