Elliott, Virginia. Shake ‘Em Up, A Practical Handbook of Polite Drinking. Fourth Printing. 1932. Hardcover with pictorial front cover (no dust jacket). It is good condition—covers show heavy rubbing and pages show a few minor stain spots. Co-written by Phil D. Strong. Illustrations by Herb Roth.
How interesting that the Prohibition era coincided with what we now know to be the golden age of the cocktail book. Many of the classic vintage titles coveted by both bon vivants and book collectors were published when drinking alcohol was legally forbidden. This book is in that class. It is a soup-to-nuts approach to drinking, with cocktail and hors d'oeuvres recipes and a lengthy section devoted to hangover cures—the premise being that the medicine cabinet should be as well stocked as the bar.
“It has taken the authors twelve years to write this book—twelve years of bathtub gin, synthetic Scotch, home-made wine and needled beer.”
