Original Post Card, Carl Andre re: Andy Warhol
Andre, Carl. Signed Post Card to Emil de Antonio. Original Work. 1989. In very good condition. Card is stamped and postmarked. The text reads, “28 Aug 89, PO BOX 1001 NY NY 10276, d’: WARHOL TAUGHT US ALL WE KNOW: AMERICAN LIVES ASPIRE TO BE TRANSFIGURED TO COMMODITY. IF BEGGARS WERE THINGS THEY’D RIDE MANKIND.” Andre’s distinctive signature follows.
Rather cryptically, Carl Andre once commented, “Andy Warhol was the perfect glass and mirror of his age and certainly the artist we deserved.” What did we deserve? Based on the additional information provided here, not much. The recipient was the filmmaker Emil de Antonio. It was de Antonio who launched Warhol’s Pop Art career when he suggested Warhol deviate from the then-prevailing Abstract Expressionist style.
