Scrambles Amongst the Alps
Whymper, Edward. Scrambles Amongst the Alps. Revised Sixth Edition. 1954. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—book contains tidy third party gift inscription, and jacket shows minor tearing, fraying, and chipping.
In this book, a mountaineering classic, Edward Whymper details his seven attempts to scale the Matterhorn in the mid 1800s. On the seventh try, he became the first to do so, upon realizing that contrary to established opinion, the best path was from the Italian side (now the main route). Unfortunately, with the summit in reach, four members of Whymper’s party died in a tragic fall. Book includes engravings also by Whymper, as well as b & w photography.
“We commenced the descent of the face. It was hideous work. The men looked like impersonations of Winter, with their hair all frosted, and their beards matted with ice.
--Edward Whymper
