Herford, Oliver. The Deb’s Dictionary. First American Edition. 1931. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows rubbing, minor fraying, and small edge tears. Illustrations also by the author.
What to give the debutante who has everything? How about this droll book? It encapsulates all the ideas and activities of a debutante season (circa 1931) into an A to Z glossary. The words and definitions run the gamut from satirical to absurd with subtle references to activities that would not become acceptable for publication until the sexual revolution thirty years hence. There is no preamble—just definitions—but there are many b & w illustrations interspersed.
“DIN. A hideous noise. If people pay to hear it, called Jazz.”
--Oliver Herford
