[Ex Libris Gore Vidal; Association Copy] Austen, Howard. The Myra Breckinridge Cookbook. Later Printing. 1976. Softcover in very good condition. Book is stamped “From the library of GORE VIDAL” on the flyleaf. Co-written by Beverly Pepper.
Gore Vidal’s 1968 satirical novel Myra Breckinridge, now a camp masterpiece, was his personal favorite. It brought the gay aesthetic into the mainstream and was famously adapted for the screen in a film starring Raquel Welch and Mae West. This cookery book by Vidal’s longtime partner Howard Austen brings the same camp themes to the staid cookbook genre. Like the novel, it too salutes old Hollywood film. In the guise of Myra, the authors point out the connection between lovemaking and gastronomy, and, of course, double entendres abound.
“But isn’t it true that something small but tasty is so much more gratifying than something so large that you can’t do anything with it?”
