[Signed to Gore Vidal and Howard Austen] Haslam, Nicholas. Sheer Opulence, Haslam Style: Glamour in Contemporary Interiors. First Edition. 2002. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket shows mild warping. Book is boldly inscribed in purple felt marker across an entire page, “For Howard and Gore with love, Nicky.” Book is stamped "From the library of GORE VIDAL" on the flyleaf.
The English decorator Nicky Haslam was peripherally in Gore Vidal’s circle and was one of the final guests at Gore Vidal and Howard Austen’s legendary home La Rondinaia, perched high atop an Amalfi Coast cliff—which is likely when and where this book was signed. In this design monograph, Haslam presents the interiors of his own homes as well of those his most noteworthy projects that illustrate a uniquely glamorous and witty style that is far beyond minimalism but tastefully below “overblown fussiness.” The book is filled color photographs and sprinkled with watercolor renderings in Haslam’s own eclectic hand.
“A London town house is a wonderful brief for a decorator. You have restrictions of space and light that you don’t get in the country, and restrictions tend to make one more inventive.”
--Nicholas Haslam
