[Signed to Gore Vidal] Clarke, Gerald. Capote, A Biography. First Edition. 1988. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is inscribed, “To Gore Vidal, Who enjoyed jousting with the subject of this book. With all best wishes, Gerald Clarke, May 18, 1988.” Book is stamped “From the library of GORE VIDAL” on the page following the flyleaf.
How interesting that in the inscription to this copy, Gerald Clarke refers to the feud between Gore Vidal and Truman Capote as “jousting.” That modern version of that word suggests playful combat. The rancor between Vidal and Capote was deadly serious, and more akin to the feudal ages when jousting might end in mortal injury. In their case, it ended somewhere even more frightening—civil court. The infamous defamation case Vidal brought against Capote is but one fascinating story in this book, which is the most comprehensive biography on one of the 20th Century’s most fascinating writers.
"[Gore Vidal] is positively obsessed with poor little Truman Capote. You would think they were running neck-and-neck for some fabulous gold prize."
