[Ex Libris Gore Vidal] McDarrah, Fred W. Kerouac & Friends, A Beat Generation Album. First Edition. 1984. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is stamped “From the library of GORE VIDAL” on the page following the flyleaf.

Has any other literary genre been more a lifestyle than a literary genre as was the Beat Generation?  Literature is not far from the surface of this book, but the emphasis is on the cultural aspects of the Beat movement. The book is a fascinating collection of contemporaneous writings that begin John Clellon Holmes’s “This Is the Beat Generation,” from 1952 in which the term “beat” first appeared and continues with essays by Lawrence Lipton, Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Norman Podhoretz, and many others. There are many sections of photographs. The author covered the Beats for the Village Voice. Gore Vidal, who owned this copy, was of the Beat age but not the “generation.” He did, however, have an infamous one-night stand with Jack Kerouac at the Chelsea Hotel.

“Kerouac and Friends is about … a specific time in our lives in New York’s Greenwich Village. Those were happy-go-lucky days for all of us who wanted to have fun and be beat.”
