[Signed by Danny Selznick with Vintage Photograph Laid In] Haver, Ronald. David O. Selznick’s Hollywood. First Edition. 1980. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows fraying, a repaired tear to the upper front cover, and a small chip to the upper spine (the red foil jacket for this title rarely wears well). It is warmly inscribed on the flyleaf, “For James and Ida Farr, who have known and been cherished by all the Selznicks, with affection always, Danny Selznick.” Laid in is a photograph which is identified in marker on its obverse, “Mrs. L.B. Mayer, Irene’s mother.”
This image-filled book is as grand as the showman whom it covers. It is quite large and very heavy and is arranged scrapbook-style with photographs, illustrations, ads, and text. It follows Selznick chronologically as he moves from Paramount to MGM to RKO and finally to his own independent unit, Selznick International. Among the films the book covers are King Kong, Dinner at Eight, Garden of Allah, Gone with the Wind, and Rebecca.
“Myron [Selznick] brought Larry Olivier and Vivien Leigh to the [set]. Shhh: she’s the Scarlett dark horse and looks damn good. Not for anybody’s ear but your own: it’s narrowed down to Paulette [Goddard], Jean Arthur, Joan Bennett and Vivien Leigh.”
