[Signed] Thompson, Hunter S. Hell’s Angels, The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs. First Edition. 1966. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket is intact but shows small edge tears and moderate fraying. Book is signed “H.S.T. SF/94” to a bookplate attached to half-title page.
In this, Hunter Thompson’s first book, he takes the nonfiction novel that Truman Capote had popularized with In Cold Blood and transforms it into what we know call Gonzo journalism. His subject was the Bay Area-based Hell’s Angels, with whom Thompson embedded himself with for a year to research the book. The Angels had recently been demonized the California Attorney General in a sensational white paper known as the Lynch Report. Thompson muses that the report only served to popularize the Hell’s Angels, which had been in decline. And, of course, the publication of Thompson’s seminal book, cemented their place in American mythology.
“The outlaw stance is patently antisocial, although most Angels, as individuals, are naturally social creatures.”
--Hunter S. Thompson
