Press Photo of Cecil Beaton. 1964. 8 x 10 glossy fiber silver gelatin. It is in very good minus condition—with heavy editorial shading painted on surface, minor dings and creases, crop marks, and newspaper notations and stamps. Photographer was M. Bates. From the archive of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, with a clipping of the story attached to the obverse.
This photo was used in a story about Cecil Beaton’s 1964 visit to the South. While touring Bellingrath Gardens, a tourist approached the famous photographer, “literally sprang out at me from the azaleas,” according to Beaton. Not recognizing him, she asked if he might be able to take a photograph of her with her camera and then proceeded to give him instructions of its operation, never the wiser that she was lecturing one of the world’s top professional photographers.
“Do you think you could manage a picture of me with this camera? It’s kinda complicated. But if you’ll move this little deal here, then push down on this little doo-hickey—”
Anonymous Tourist, to Cecil Beaton
