Beaton, Cecil. The Book of Beauty. First Edition. 1930. Hardcover, no dust jacket. Book is in good condition—pages are clean and intact with no foxing; the boards show moderate-to-heavy wear; and the spine is near perfect. There is a third party gift inscription in elegant hand.
Aspiring man-of-the-world Cecil Beaton did something very clever to get there. He began photographing the most famous and beautiful women of his era in distinctive quasi-Surrealistic settings. Being so posed became one of the status symbols of Bright-Young-Things era London, and soon Beaton was in high demand. He was not only clever, however, he had talent and an extraordinary eye for detail. In this most rare of Beaton book—his first—he collects these early photographs and accompanies them with a paragraph or two of text on each of the sitters who included the leading socialites of the day and actresses from Hollywood, Broadway, and the West End.
“What makes a beauty? We despair, we have little inkling of the secret, for often in no way do beauties resemble one another.”
--Cecil Beaton
