[Signed to George Cukor] Eells, George. Ginger, Loretta and Irene Who? First Edition. 1976. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is warmly inscribed on the title page, “For George, with gratitude, admiration and affection, George.” George Cukor’s famous Paul Landacre-designed bookplate is attached to the front endpaper.
George Eells, one of the great Hollywood biographers, came up with a terrific concept for this book. He traces the trajectories of six actresses who made it big in the early 1930s—Ginger Rogers, Loretta Young, Irene Bentley, Miriam Hopkins, Ruth Etting, and Kay Francis—with the object of determining what qualities and breaks make for a long and satisfying career in Hollywood. It is a fascinating book, full of lessons that hold true even today. Cukor, the previous owner of this copy, worked with several of the actresses mentioned in the book. He was also a friend of the author.
“This is a story of triumph and defeat, of the advantages and disadvantages of fame—individually and generally.”
--George Eells
