[Ex Libris Gore Vidal] Summers, Claude J. Christopher Isherwood. First Edition. 1980. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is stamped “From the library of GORE VIDAL” on the half title page. Vidal is not only referenced in the book, a quote from him praising Isherwood is the opening sentence on the front dust jacket flap.
Written while Christopher Isherwood was still living (and long before his voluminous diaries were published), this book is a critical analysis of his work and its influences. It is a tightly written, insightful book whose organization is enhanced by Isherwood’s distinct periods of work, from his youth in the last days of decadent Berlin (as the Nazis rose to power) to the calm and happy years in Los Angeles, where he circulated among the rich and famous (among them, his friend Gore Vidal) and where he found love and spirituality.
“Described by Gore Vidal as ‘the best prose writer in English,’ [Christopher Isherwood] is a masterful stylist, a subtle ironist, and a witty and compassionate moralist.”
--Claude J. Summers
