Among the Porcupines, Signed by Carol Matthau
[Signed] Matthau, Carol. Among the Porcupines. First Edition. 1992. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket is price-clipped. Book is inscribed on the half title page, “For James, you’re terrific. Thank you, Carol.”
Carol Matthau is divine, but she is in danger of slipping through the cracks of history—social history that is. Yes, was married to Oscar-winning actor Walter Matthau, and so one might say she was one of those 1980s-era Hollywood wives, but that entirely misses not only her point but her also her depth. In this highly stylized memoir, she discusses her days as a New York debutante (alongside her lifelong best friends Gloria Vanderbilt and Oona Chaplin, with Truman Capote serving as their court jester), her turbulent first (and second) marriages to Pulitzer-winning writer William Saroyan, and finally, her many happy (though not uncomplicated) years with Walter Matthau.
“There it was—love. You can’t see it, you can’t touch it, but it permeates every cell of your being, no matter what the consequences.”
