Haywire, Ex Libris Gore Vidal
[Ex Libris Gore Vidal] Hayward, Brooke. Haywire. Third Printing. 1977. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is stamped “From the library of GORE VIDAL” on the flyleaf.
This Hollywood memoir was one of the great critical and commercial successes of the 1970s. In it, the daughter of Leland Hayward and Margaret Sullavan recalls her extraordinary parents, their careers in Hollywood, the terrible break-up of their marriage, and its devastating impact on their three children. In parts, it is terribly sad—a tragedy, but there are also light-heartened moments in which the idiosyncratic charm of her parents is in evidence and beautifully described. Hayward’s first step-mother, Slim Keith, comes off quite well in the book. Her second, Pamela Harriman, not so much.
“I will forgive anything you ever do if you do it with good manners.”
--Leland Hayward, to His Children
