In the Kitchen with Love, Signed by Sophia Loren to Burt Lancaster
[Signed by Sophia Loren to Burt Lancaster] Loren, Sophia. In the Kitchen with Love: An Invitation to Share Sophia’s Favorite Dishes as She Prepares Them in Her Own Kitchen. First Edition. 1972. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows edge tears, creasing, and chips to the upper spine and lower right front corner. Book is warmly inscribed to Burt Lancaster, who, along with Loren, was among the all-star cast in the 1976 thriller, The Cassandra Crossing.
Italian food has been happily assimilated into American cuisine for generations now, more fully integrated than other ethnic variety. Even the most poorly traveled American has a fundamental understanding of Italian pronunciation by way of commonplace Italian foods (spaghetti, gnocchi, lasagna, to name but a few examples). This cookbook from the beloved international film star was conceived in 1968 when Loren herself was with child and had, at last, time off from work to prepare her favorite meals, mostly Italian but others that she had come to enjoy through her international travels. The recipient of this copy, Burt Lancaster, was an enthusiastic chef himself and undoubtedly appreciated this cookbook from his glamorous-yet-earthy co-star.
“There was a time not so long ago when women regarded the kitchen stove as a form of slavery. Today the slavery is over. So why not transform the chains into an instrument of delight? I know many people who think like that, and many others who only need the right sort of push. Well, here I am to give the push.”
