Was there any 20th Century writer who lived so much of his life in the public eye as Truman Capote, or whose social life became so intertwined with his work? It explains why fascination with him never seems to subside, and most likely, it was his intention. There are dozens of books on Capote, many in which the social Truman upstages the literary one. This author, an English professor, recognizes “one may lose sight of the fact that the writer and the ‘star’ are not the same” and seeks to correct that with a critical analysis of his work, particularly fascinating are the chapters on Breakfast at Tiffany’s, In Cold Blood, and Answered Prayers.
“Capote’s career reached its summit when his much heralded book, In Cold Blood, was published. Because of the widespread interest as well as the enormous financial success of the book, reviewers spoke of 1966 as belonging to Capote. The work brought the kind of acclaim that many people had anticipated for him since his wunderkind years when his first stories were printed in various magazines.”
