Introduction by Paula Wallace. Photographs by Adam Kuehl. Oscar de la Renta once commented, “Never, ever confuse what happens on a runway with fashion. A runway is spectacle. It’s only fashion when a woman puts it on.” It’s emblematic of the great New York fashion designer’s style, in which the magic was grounded in reality, and the dresses were always beautiful. This well-illustrated Skira Rizzoli book was published in conjunction with an André Leon Talley-curated retrospective of de la Renta’s work at the Savannah College of Art and design. Seventy dresses were included in the exhibition, among them his most iconic, included those worn by first ladies, Academy Award-winning actresses, Best Dressed List mainstays, et al. “As a designer, Oscar’s vision never vacillated. He understood a woman’s needs and believed that women should look feminine, coquettish and always chic. His taste for color, style, and texture was unfailing.--Oscar de la Renta Client Mercedes Bass
