Hirschfeld, Al. Manhattan Oases, New York’s 1932 Speak-Easies. First Edition. 1932. Book and dust jacket are both in good plus condition—endpapers show discoloration and jacket shows chipping (particularly to upper and lower spine), but still attractive.
W.C. Fields quipped, “Once, during Prohibition, I was forced to live for days on nothing but food and water.” He was obviously not residing in New York at the time. As this book makes gloriously clear, excess was the order of that era, and nowhere was that more pronounced than in the range and depth of the speakeasies of Manhattan. On the eve of Repeal, Hirschfeld portrays thirty-six of them, in magnificent b & w line drawings. Hirschfeld’s first book.
“Under repeal [of Prohibition] it may well be that drinking can never be quite the same. But let us try our best to preserve those good things which came into being during the age of nullification.”
--Heywood Broun
