Christie’s Geneva. Jewels from the Personal Collection of Princess Salimah Aga Khan. 1995. Hardcover. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition.
According to Sotheby’s auctioneer Robert Woolley, the “three things beginning with the letter d that are good for the auction business [are] death, divorce, and debt.” It turns out there is a fourth—(charitable) donation. The glamorous ex-wife to the Aga Khan, one of the world’s richest men, auctioned off her $30 million collection of jewelry to finance her fundraising efforts for Third World children. The sale was deemed the most sumptuous since the Duchess of Windsor collection eight years earlier and included her magnificent Beguim Blue diamond set in a diamond pendant necklace, which fetched over $12 million.
“The jewels in this catalogue . . . are undoubtedly exquisite examples of the jewellers’ art. They are also a symbol of an extraordinary and interesting life.”
